Do you think it’s good to work as events organiser?
I’m going to study Integrated events and project management. I’m not sure about what events organiser has to do. But heard that it’s a tiring job and you’ve got to work from morning till late night, getting very little pay.
Anybody has such experience of working as events organiser? Please shareee!! ^^
I am a volunteer Event Organiser for several years, so can’t say on salary part, but yes, organising an event can be a very tiring but satisfying job. For a one day event, I could take up to 3 months to brainstorm the ideas, draft it out and implement it on the actual day, tons of things to look into esp for big events. You will be very satisfied if things go well during the event day, but of cos no matter how hard u planned, there will be some hiccups on the day, u will have to always be prepared for unexpected situation. I would say, go for it, u will find it interesting and will enjoy it more when u get the hang of it. Will be happy to share with u more on the little i know thru my limited experience in Events Planning.

A Landscape of Events $22.94 In "A Landscape of Events," the celebrated French architect, urban planner, and philosopher Paul Virilio focuses on the cultural chaos of the 1980s and 1990s. It was a time, he writes, that reflected the "cruelty of an epoch, the hills and dales of daily life, the usual clumps of habits and commonplaces." Urban disorientation, the machines of war, and the acceleration of events in contemporary life are Virilio’s ongoing concerns. He explores them in events ranging from media coverage of the Gulf War to urban rioting and lawlessness. Some will see Virilio as a pessimist discouraged by "the acceleration of the reality of time," while others will find his recording of "atypical events" to be clairvoyant. |

Events and Festivals $40.37 Events and Festivals have an increasingly vital role in our leisure lifestyles. We recognise them as part of our lives. For some, of they are a very significant part of our lives. The network of festivals and events that either adorn the world now, or are planned for the future, can both serve to motivate new visits as well as enhance the lives of the people who live in – or near – the host area. Sangati: Events $24.68 Sangati is a startling insight into the lives of Dalit women who face the double disadvantage of caste and gender discrimination. Written in a colloquial style, the original Tamil version overturns the decorum and aesthetics of upper-caste, upper-class Tamil literature and culture and, in turn, projects a positive cultural identity for Dalits in general and for Dalit women in particular. Sangati flouts received notions about what a novel should be and has no plot in the normal sense. It relates the mindscape of a Dalit woman who steps out of her small town community, only to enter a caste-ridden and hierarchical society, which constantly questions her caste status. Realizing that leaving her community is no escape, she has to come to terms with her identity as an educated, economically independent woman who chooses to live alone. In relating this tale, Bama turns Sangati into the story not just of one individual, but of a pariah community. |

Plurality, Conjunction and Events $12.28 Plurality, Conjunction and Events presents a novel theory of plural and conjoined phrases, in an event-based semantic framework. It begins by reviewing options for treating the alternation between collective’ and distributive’ readings of sentences containing plural or conjoined noun phrases, including analyses from both the modern and the premodern literature. It is argued that plural and conjoined noun phrases are unambiguously group-denoting, and that the collective/distributive distinction therefore must be located in the predicates with which these noun phrases combine. More specifically, predicates must have a hidden argument place for events; the collective/distributive distinction may then be represented in the part/whole structure of these events. This allows a natural treatment of collectivizing’ adverbial expressions, and of pluractional’ affixes; it also allows a unified semantics for conjunction, in which conjoined sentences and predicates denote groups of events, much like conjoined noun phrases denote groups of individuals. |

Events, Phrases, and Questions $50.83 This book examines some knotty problems in natural language. These typically involve questions where the sense or the grammaticality of an utterance teeters on or over the edge of acceptability among native speakers. The phenomena in question have been examined within syntactic theory for over two decades with no wholly satisfactory outcome. Dr Truswell broadens the scope of the enquiry to the interface between syntactic structure and other, indirectly related, cognitive, and semantic structures such as aspect, agentivity, and presupposition. Uniting work from philosophical, cognitive and linguistic perspectives, he develops a model of the internal structure of events as perceptual and cognitive units. He deploys the model to explain and predict the acceptability of particular formulations. He considers the individuation of events in the light of the model and provides a novel account of patterns of question formation. He shows that these patterns throw new light on central claims of Chomsky’s biolinguistic minimalist program and Jackendoff’s parallel architecture theory of mind and language. This is work at the cutting edge of linguistic theory, catholic in its theoretical scope, open to insights from cognate fields, and illustrated with examples from a wide range of languages. It will interest philosophers, semanticists and cognitive scientists concerned with topics like events, agentivity, and planning, as well as linguists studying syntax or the syntax-semantics interface. |

Ten Great Events in History $19.38 Excerpts: Patriotism, or love of country, is one of the tests of nobility of character. No great man ever lived that was not a patriot in the highest and truest sense. From the earliest times, the sentiment of patriotism has been aroused in the hearts of men by the narrative of heroic deeds inspired by love of country and love of liberty. This truth furnishes the key to the arrangement and method of the present work. The ten epochs treated are those that have been potential in shaping subsequent events; and when men have struck blows for human liberty against odds and regardless of personal consequences. The simple narrative carries its own morals, and the most profitable work for the teacher will be to merely supplement the narrative so that the picture presented shall be all the more vivid. Moral reflections are wearisome and superfluous. The great events in history are those where, upon special occasions, a man or a people have made a stand against tyranny, and have preserved or advanced freedom for the people… |

Momentous Events, Vivid Memories $43.81 The bombing of Pearl Harbor, the assassination of President Kennedy, the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger: every generation has unforgettable events, the shared memory of which can create fleeting intimacy among strangers. These public memories, combined with poignant personal moments–the first day of college, a baseball game with one’s father, praise from a mentor–are the critical shaping events of individual lives. Although experimental memory studies have long been part of empirical psychology, and psychotherapy has focused on repressed or traumatizing memories, relatively little attention has been paid to the inspiring, touching, amusing, or revealing moments that highlight most lives. What makes something unforgettable? How do we learn to share the significance of memories? David Pillemer’s research, brought together in this gracefully written book, extends the current study of narrative and specific memory. Drawing on a variety of evidence and methods–cognitive and developmental psychology, cross-cultural study, psychotherapy case studies, autobiographies and diaries–Pillemer elaborates on five themes: the function of memory; how children learn to construct and share personal memories; memory as a complex interactive system of image, emotion, and narrative; individual and group differences in memory function and performance; and how unique events linger in memory and influence lives. A provocative last chapter, full of striking examples, considers potential variations in memory across gender, culture, and personality. "Momentous Events, Vivid Memories" is itself a compelling and memorable book. |

Whether seeking to learn more about a specific terrorist group or act, researching the potential use of weapons of mass destruction by terrorists, or searching for primary documents on the subject this is an essential resource. The book begins by defining terrorism and exploring the ruthless philosophy that underlies it. It provides a narrative history and chronology of world terrorism; describes the most important terrorist groups, both past and present; and details four historically important terrorist acts-a 1906 lynching in Tennessee, a massive flaunting of power by the Ku Klux Klan from 1915 to 1925, Black September’s attack on Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics in 1972, and the traumatic events of September 11, 2001-that illustrate the key strategies that terrorists employ and the wide range of goals that motivates them. It also includes a number of significant primary documents, ranging from official government overviews of the terrorist threat and international agreements related to terrorism, to presidential declarations on the subject and statements issued by terrorists themselves, in which they attempt to clarify their own motivations and intentions. |

She started as an English teacher, moved into administration, and served as president of a private junior college in Jackson, Mississippi, for twenty years, a position from which she retired in 1995. It was in Jackson that she found her true calling, teaching the Word of God in a local church, Colonial Heights Baptist Church. Soon after becoming a member, she began to teach Sunday School, first to older women and currently to younger women, during a span of over thirty years. Throughout the years she has taught men and women of all ages in other Bible studies, particularly studies concerning end times. Soon after she began to teach prophecy, she came to understand that no one book tells the whole story. God’s events-now and forever-are presented from Genesis through The Revelation of the Lord Jesus Christ. She has pieced together God’s plan by consulting the whole Bible. Some people may not hold all the views Miss Nan has presented, but it is important to understand that she wrote what God laid on her heart as she studied His Word. |

Ten Great Events In History $7.79 Patriotism, or love of country, is one of the tests of nobility of character. |

Prophecies on World Events $4.02 Over the past four centuries, Nostradamus’s predictions have proven startlingly accurate. Long before their actual invention, mechanical devices such as the periscope, the submarine, and the airplane appear in accurate detail in the great seer’s journals. Other passages foresee Napoleon’s conquest, the Bolshevik Revolution, the rise of Hitler, and countless events yet to come. The French occultist won extraordinary fame in his own lifetime, curing thousands in the plague years by unorthodox remedies. He published his first collection of prophecies in 1555, and had composed 1100 quatrains by the time of his death. 1001 Events That Made America $3.95 "A highly readable chronology…one of those rare books that readers will enjoy having close at hand." –"Tulsa World" For some, patriotism means flags and parades, for others it’s "my country right or wrong." But it’s much more than that, and, as Alan Alexrod observes in this revealing review of our history, true patriotism is built on a bedrock of understanding–of who we are as individuals and as a nation, of how our ideals and our democracy have evolved, and of what it really means to be an American. It’s a challenge that calls for an open mind and a clear perspective on the people, events, and issues that shaped our society–precisely what Alexrod provides. Just released in paperback, this popular chronology of key events in our history sweeps from 45,000 B.C., when the first intrepid Asians crossed the Bering Land Bridge, to the 21st century, which finds us the richest and most powerful nation in the world. This panoramic journey is marked out by more than 1,000 milestones and turning points, each explained in concise, lively detail. Axelrod has a wonderful knack for capturing powerful ideas, towering figures, and definitive moments with a memorable turn of phrase. From Plymouth Rock to Pearl Harbor, from the Civil War to the Civil Rights movement, from George Washington to George W. Bush, we learn what happened, who was involved, and why it’s important. And as we journey from past to present, we discover the real answer to the question: What is a patriot? |

Designing Resilience: Preparing for Extreme Events $37.66 In the wake of severe climatic events and terrorist acts, and the emergence of dangerous technologies, communities, nations, and global organizations have diligently sought to create strategies to prepare for such events. "Designing Resilience" presents case studies of extreme events and analyzes the ability of affected individuals, institutions, governments, and technological systems to cope with disaster. This volume defines resilience as it relates to disaster management at specific stages: mitigation, prevention, preparation, and response and recovery. The book illustrates models by which to evaluate resilience at levels ranging from individuals to NGOs to governmental jurisdictions and examines how resilience can be developed and sustained. A group or nation’s ability to withstand events and emerge from them with their central institutions intact is at the core of resilience. Quality of response, capacity to improvise, coordination, flexibility, and endurance are also determinants. Individual case studies, including Hurricane Katrina in the United States, the London bombings, and French preparedness for the Avian flu, demonstrate effective and ineffective strategies. The contributors reveal how the complexity and global interconnectivity of modern systems–whether they are governments, mobile populations, power grids, financial systems, or the Internet–have transcended borders and created a new level of exposure that has made them especially vulnerable to extreme events. Yet these far-reaching global systems also possess the ability to alert and respond at greater speeds than ever before. The authors analyze specific characteristics of resilient systems–the qualities they possess and how they become resilient–to determine if there are ways to build a system of resilience from the ground up. As such, "Designing Resilience" will inform a broad range of students and scholars in areas of public administration, public policy, and the social sciences. |

The Jefferson Lecture is a tribute to McCullough’s lifetime investigation of history. In this short speech, this master historian tracks his fascination with all things historical to his early days in Pittsburgh where he "learned to love history by way of books" in bookshops and at the local library. McCullough eloquently leads us through the founding fathers’ attraction to history, letting us in on his composition of 1776 as well as the Pulitzer Prize winning John Adams. His obvious affection for history is inspiring, because it encompasses the whole reach of the human drama. In McCullough’s able hands, history truly "is a larger way of looking at life." |

Events in the Taeping Rebellion $38.5 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: – ever up to 1850, when the " Kwangse rebellion" broke out.1 This indication of the downward course of the Manchu Dynasty, after the British war, soon became still more apparent. The very unfair proportion of Manehus employed in Government posts was a deviation from the fundamental principle of Chinese polity; and, as might be expected, it constantly nourished a feeling of dissatisfaction among the Chinese, which, though they were obliged to be at some pains to conceal it, occasionally escaped them. The selling of Government posts, carried to excess, was dangerous in the highest degree for the Government. Hitherto the dread of the more warlike Manehus had been sufficient to repress or prevent the general rising of a peace-loving people. "If the practice of selling offices be continued " (Mr. Meadows wrote in June 1846) " in the extent to which it is at present carried, nothing is more likely, now that the prestige of Manchu power in war has received a severe shock in the late encounters with the English, than that a Chinese Belisarius will arise and extirpate or drive into Tartary the Manchu garrisons and bannermen, who, during a residence in China twice as long as the Vandals in Africa have greatly deteriorated in the military virtues, while they still retain enough of the insolence of conquerors to gain themselves the hatred of theChinese." In another letter, dated 25th January 1849, and addressed to a gentleman who had occupied an eminent position in China, he further observed that " there was a great need of able men at the head of affairs," and that the country was entering on a period of insurrection and anarchy that " must end sooner or later in the downfall of the Manchu Dynasty." For five years previous to this period robberies by bands of men, often numbering hund… |

A Narrative of Events – PB $4.2 This book brings back into print, for the first time since the 1830s, a text that was central to the transatlantic campaign to fully abolish slavery in Britain’s colonies. James Williams, an eighteen-year-old Jamaican "apprentice" (former slave), came to Britain in 1837 at the instigation of the abolitionist Joseph Sturge. The "Narrative" he produced there, one of very few autobiographical texts by Caribbean slaves or former slaves, became one of the most powerful abolitionist tools for effecting the immediate end to the system of apprenticeship that had replaced slavery. Describing the hard working conditions on plantations and the harsh treatment of apprentices unjustly incarcerated, Williams argues that apprenticeship actually worsened the conditions of Jamaican ex-slaves: former owners, no longer legally permitted to directly punish their workers, used the Jamaican legal system as a punitive lever against them. Williams’s story documents the collaboration of local magistrates in this practice, wherein apprentices were routinely jailed and beaten for both real and imaginary infractions of the apprenticeship regulations. In addition to the complete text of Williams’s original "Narrative, " this fully annotated edition includes nineteenth-century responses to the controversy from the British and Jamaican press, as well as extensive testimony from the Commission of Enquiry that heard evidence regarding the "Narrative’s" claims. These fascinating and revealing documents constitute the largest extant body of direct testimony by Caribbean slaves or apprentices. |

During September 2-5, 1666, occurred a catastrophe of almost equal horror. A fire, which broke out in a baker’s house near the bridge, spread on all sides so rapidly that the people were unable to extinguish it until two-thirds of the city had been destroyed. |

Events That Changed America in the Nineteenth Century $15.58 In the year 1800 the United States was a fledgling nation. By the time the century ended we had expanded westward exponentially, stamped our imprint as the major power in the Western hemisphere, revolutionized our economy from agriculture to manufacturing, and suffered the schism of a civil war that nearly brought the nation as conceived by our forefathers to an end. To help students better understand the cataclysmic changes of this century, this unique resource offers detailed description and expert analysis of the most important 19th-century events in America: the Louisiana Purchase, the War of 1812, the Monroe Doctrine, Jacksonian Democracy, Abolition, the war with Mexico, the Civil War, the Industrial Revolution, the closing of the frontier, and the Spanish-American War. Each of these events is dealt with in a separate chapter. A factual introductory essay provides clear, concise information in chronological order. The interpretive essay, written in a widely appealing style by a recognized authority, then places each event in a broader context and explores the short-term and far-reaching ramifications of the event. A selected bibliography that follows identifies the most important and recent scholarship about the event. A full-page photo or illustration of each event portrays a visual component to the narrative. The volume contains three useful appendices: a glossary of names, events, and terms; a timeline of important events in 19th-century American history; and a list of 19th-century U.S. presidents, vice presidents, and secretaries of state. This work is an ideal addition to the high school, community college, and undergraduate reference shelf, as well as excellent supplementaryreading in social studies and American history courses. |

Men and Events of My Time in India $40.38 MEN AND EVENTS OF MY TIME IN INDIA. BY SIR RICHARD TEMPLE, BART., G. C. 8. I., C. I. E., D. C. L. LATI FOUNCE HIXI8TKB OF OTDIA UEDnNAHT-aOYERXI OOTERMOR OF BOVBAT. DR. B. R AMBEDKAR OPEN UNIVERSITY UNIVERSITY – LIBRARY N14913 LONDON JOHN MURRAY, ALBEMARLE STREET. 1882. LONDON PRINTED BY WILLIAM CLOWES AND SONS. LIMITED, STAMFORD STREET AND CHAX1XG C OS8. TO HER MOST GRACIOUS MAJESTY THE QUEEN, EMPRESS OF INDIA, THIS IMPERFECT NARRATIVE, RELATING TO SOME AMONG THE MOST ILLUSTRIOUS OF HER MAJESTYS SERVANTS AND SUBJECTS IN THE EAST, AND TO MANY OF THE GREAT RESULTS ACHIEVED, DURING HER MAJESTYS AUSPICIOUS REIGN, IN THE INDIAN EMPIRE, IS WITH HER MAJESTYS PERMISSION HUMBLY DEDICATED BY THE AUTHOR. PREFACE. THIS work presents to the world a picture of the men and events that have passed before me during the thirty years of my life in India. The objects and limits of the under taking are set forth in the beginning of the introductory chapter, and therefore the preface may be brief. My last book, India in 1880, related to external things, to measures of national improvement, to results produced by diverse trains of causes, f the character and disposition of the Natives in masses. But it rarely or never comprised any delineation of individual character. This book, on the contrary, is mainly devoted to the description of particular men in their public capacities, or to summaries of their official conduct, and of their idiosyncrasies as displayed in the manner whereby they served the country. More or less of space is allotted according to the importance of the parts they played, or the magnitude of the sphere in which their powers found employment. The account given of them is derhxsd frompersonal knowledge, and not from annals or records. It therefore is not absolutely complete as a chronicle either of them or of the circumstances in wliich they moved. For I cannot pretend to know everything about the many persons who are noticed in this work, or to have been acquainted with all the men and affairs of a whole generation, in so wide an empire as India. Consequently some well-known events, or some affectionately remembered episodes may be found to have been omitted from the narrative, and may therefore be missed by those who are familiar with the time to which it refers. But unless I have oogninnoe of these cases, I d not trouble the reader bfetary of them, however interesttngithey may be. vi PREFACE. Still, havjpg been thrown into many arenas of labour, and been brought into contact with many men who have since become famous, I am necessarily conversant with much that may well be stated for tke general good. At a time like the present, when the British people take a conscientious interest in the Eastern empire, it behoves every Englishman who – possesses knowledge to communicate it to his countrymen in as popular and readable a form as possible. Though I trust that the story, so far as it extends, will be found correct by critics already acquainted with I |

A Series of Unfortunate Events #13: The End $5.94 Dear Reader, You are presumably looking at the back of this book, or the end of the end. The end of the end is the best place to begin the end, because if you read the end from the beginning of the beginning of the end to the end of the end of the end, you will arrive at the end of the end of your rope. This book is the last in A Series of Unfortunate Events, and even if you braved the previous twelve volumes, you probably can’t stand such unpleasantries as a fearsome storm, a suspicious beverage, a herd of wild sheep, an enormous bird cage, and a truly haunting secret about the Baudelaire parents. It has been my solemn occupation to complete the history of the Baudelaire orphans, and at last I am finished. You likely have some other occupation, so if I were you I would drop this book at once, so the end does not finish you. With all due respect, Lemony Snicket |

Human Resource Management for Events: Managing the Event Workforce $69.61 Human Resource Management for Events is the first text to cover management of human resources in the event environment. Linking theory, research and application it covers the differing and various types of event in which human resource management is key, such as: * Business Events – a vast sector including events people who manage conferences, exhibitions, incentive trips and individual business travel. * Sporting Events – this sector includes sporting events ranging from the Olympic Games, Rugby World Cup, Soccer World Cup, Tour de France, Grand Prix to many smaller, local sporting events. * Arts and Entertainment – the logistics, risk and financial issues facing entertainment events are leading to the development of more sophisticated operational skills for this sector. Music festivals are increasingly popular. * Public Events – civic ceremonies, parades, celebrations, festivals and protests all fall within the scope of public events. Planning, approval and risk management are increasingly on the agenda for all levels of government. The particular challenges provided by such events are varied. The size of the workforce explodes at the time of the event to include the event management team, many paid staff, hundreds of volunteers and multiple contractors, such as food vendors and cleaning teams. Everyone working on the site comes into the scope of the event workforce. Little time is available for training and motivation plays a key role in retention and customer service. Decision making occurs on the run and the event is over before anyone can think about performance appraisal. The environment is further characterised by a fast pace, high stress levels and many workers are fatigued by the bump in period before the event audience pours through the gates to add yet another level of pressure. These features of the human resources environment are quite different to those of the traditional workforce. Human Resource Management for Events is vital reading for both students and practitioners involved in this crucially important aspect of event management. * The first book to cover management of human resources in the event environment * Links theory, research and application in event HRM in the context of both mega events and smaller scale events * Considers HRM in each of the major event areas – business, sporting, arts & entertainment and public. |

White Love and Other Events-PB $28.51 In this wide-ranging cultural and political history of Filipinos and the Philippines, Vicente L. Rafael examines the period from the onset of U.S. colonialism in 1898 to the emergence of a Filipino diaspora in the 1990s. Self-consciously adopting the essay form as a method with which to disrupt epic conceptions of Filipino history, Rafael treats in a condensed and concise manner clusters of historical detail and reflections that do not easily fit into a larger whole. "White Love and Other Events in Filipino History" is thus a view of nationalism as an unstable production, as Rafael reveals how, under what circumstances, and with what effects the concept of the nation has been produced and deployed in the Philippines. With a focus on the contradictions and ironies that suffuse Filipino history, Rafael delineates the multiple ways that colonialism has both inhabited and enabled the nationalist discourse of the present. His topics range from the colonial census of 1903-1905, in which a racialized imperial order imposed by the United States came into contact with an emergent revolutionary nationalism, to the pleasures and anxieties of nationalist identification as evinced in the rise of the Marcos regime. Other essays examine aspects of colonial domesticity through the writings of white women during the first decade of U.S. rule; the uses of photography in ethnology, war, and portraiture; the circulation of rumor during the Japanese occupation of Manila; the reproduction of a hierarchy of languages in popular culture; and the spectral presence of diasporic Filipino communities within the nation-state. A critique of both U.S. imperialism and Filipino nationalism, "White Love and Other Events in Filipino History" creates a sense of epistemological vertigo in the face of former attempts to comprehend and master Filipino identity. This volume should become a valuable work for those interested in Southeast Asian studies, Asian-American studies, postcolonial studies, and cultural studies. |

The Story of Q.: Inspired by Actual Events $18.22 An ancient parable speaks of a divine stream that poured forth from the earth itself. It bubbled up along the road of life and many, tired and footsore, gathered to refresh themselves there. Over time, altars and walls were erected to protect the source of the stream, and a special caste of men named themselves the streams guardians; under their guidance, only a precious few could access the water. Wars were fought over when and how people could drink. Eventually, so many were turned away that the stream was forgotten, but when all the chanting and ceremonies cease, there are still those convinced they can hear, somewhere deep within the edifice, the sound of water coursing over rock. Based on actual events, N. M. Freeman’s "the story of Q." is about four people divided by time and space, who still hear the water fl owing in the depths of their hearts. Meet Mateo, Farah, Rose, and Roger: strangers unknowingly tied together by a mysterious document known as Q. This ancient document tears apart their preconceived notions about God, religion, and themselves. The Q document threatens existing notions about the meaning of life. There are those who would keep its contents hidden in an effort to hinder the destruction of the modern church. There are also those who would share the document with all mankind in order to return human spiritual awareness to its purest form, like the forgotten stream of the parable. Without doubt, the Q document could tear humanity apart-but it could also lift the human race to a new level of divine consciousness. |

Existential Anthropology: Events, Exigencies, and Effects $32.18 ."what is truly worthwhile in this loose grouping of essays is the ethnographic examples. Powerfully presented, beautifully written (the final three pages of the book offer poignantly evocative description of ethnography as a way of living) and loaded with telling detail." Arthur Kleinman in the JRAI Inspired by existential thought, but using ethnographic methods, Jackson explores a variety of compelling topics, including 9/11, episodes from the war in Sierra Leone and its aftermath, the marginalization of indigenous Australians, the application of new technologies, mundane forms of ritualization, the magical use of language, the sociality of violence, the prose of suffering, and the discourse of human rights. Throughout this compelling work, Jackson demonstrates that existentialism, far from being a philosophy of individual being, enables us to explore issues of social existence and coexistence in new ways, and to theorise events as the sites of a dynamic interplay between the finite possibilities of the situations in which human beings find themselves and the capacities they yet possess for creating viable forms of social life. Michael Jackson is a graduate of the Universities of Auckland (New Zealand and Cambridge (UK), and has, for many years, carried out ethnographic fieldwork in Sierra Leone and Aboriginal Australia. The author of numerous books of anthropology, including the prize-winning Paths Toward a Clearing and At Home in the World, he has also published five books of poetry and two novels. Michael Jackson has taught in his native New Zealand, Australia, the United States, and Denmark, where he is presently Professor of Anthropology at the University of Copenhagen. |
