Surprise Party Planning by Brady Smith
Surprise party planning is very similar to other party planning with one key exception: the element of surprise! If you are going to plan a surprise party, consider the guest of honor carefully. Some people are better suited to a surprise party than others. Surprise parties are great for birthdays, anniversaries, retirement, and bridal showers. Surprise parties are not the best choice for expectant mothers, the elderly, or people with a known heart condition. Bear that in mind when you are deciding if a surprise party is the best choice for your guest of honor.
The first step in surprise party planning is to decide a date for the party. Do not choose date that is a holiday, such as Halloween, New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day, or Christmas. Ask around and make sure there is not another party or event planned on the same date, such as a wedding, family reunion, or another party.
Talk to the guest of honor’s family and friends to make sure that he or she will be free on the planned party date. Once you set the party date, create your guest list and prepare invitations. Be sure to make it very clear on the invitation that it is a SURPRISE! Ask you guests to RSVP. Be sure to have the guests RSVP to a clearly indicated person. You do not want RSVP’s being sent to the guest of honor!
Another important step in surprise party planning is to plan a fake activity for the day of the party. Enlist a close friend of the guest of honor; this can also be a spouse, boyfriend, or girlfriend. Be sure to keep in mind when planning this activity the attire the guest of honor will be wearing. That way you can have guests follow a similar dress code. You don’t want guests in fancy party clothes, and the guest of honor arriving in jeans and a t shirt.
Be mindful when planning your decorations that you don’t want these visible from the outside. Decorating the outside of your party venue would definitely ruin the surprise. You want your guests to arrive about 30 minutes before the guest of honor. Have snacks and beverages for them to eat and drink during the wait. Be sure to let guests know to park away from the party location so they don’t spoil the surprise.
Plan your decorations and food items well in advance of the party date. You want to create a budget early on, then plan food and decorations that fit within your budget. Some popular food item ideas are: chicken nuggets; nuts; chicken wings; pizza; cocktail sausages; chips and dip; shellfish; cheese and crackers; fondue; and pigs in a blanket. Beverage choices can include sodas, iced tea, lemonade, beer, and wine. Be sure to include some fun Party Supplies such as party poppers, silly string, and noisemakers.
Perform your surprise party planning using a budget and a checklist. Keep organized, and follow the simple guidelines above for the best surprise party ever. Have fun!
